Another month means another donation, and we are particularly excited about this one. One of our new merchants on Eat Love Give, Val Fishbain, owner of Spread the Love, introduced us to the organization PATH. PATH, which stands for People Assisting the Homeless, is ending homelessness for individuals, families, and communities, by building affordable housing and providing supportive services throughout California. As stated on their website, “It all started with a letter written by Claire and Rev. Charles Orr, calling for the community to address the ever-increasing issue of homelessness. In response, on the night of December 8, 1983, 60 people gathered together to figure out how to help people who were experiencing homelessness in their neighborhoods. On that night, PATH was born.
“Across the state, we help people find permanent housing and provide case management, medical and mental healthcare, benefits advocacy, employment training, and other services to help them maintain their homes stably. Since 2013, we have connected more than 7,500 people to permanent homes.”
We spoke with Val to find out more about how she became involved with PATH and why this organization is so close to her heart.
“Back in 2011, Zach and I volunteered along with our friends to host a dinner at PATH. We shopped and cooked for their temporary residents one night. We got to serve and talk to their residents who were very gracious and thankful for our service. It was a rewarding experience to say the least. I knew I wanted to cook and be of service through PATH again, but my job as a social worker back then kept me very busy. I was working with homeless and trafficked teens in LA County until I decided to pursue Spread The Love® full time in the end of 2016. I felt somewhat of a void when I left social work so I looked into cooking for PATH again. I really enjoyed the experience of cooking and serving food to people who need it most in our community. So, on November 2017, I invited our friends to volunteer. From there, it became clearer that I want to continue helping PATH with their mission to end homelessness in Los Angeles and beyond. I feel grateful everyday for the food I get to make for my family, and I just wish for others to have the same. It is truly unfortunate that some of our brothers and sisters suffer with no basic necessities. In June, I am planning on attending their volunteer day event along with Zach and our two young daughters. And in September, is when I plan to have our own fundraising event here in Los Angeles to benefit their Making it Home campaign.”
We are so thankful that Val has introduced us to such an amazing organization, especially one that takes place in our hometown. We’re looking forward to becoming more involved with this charity, and we hope you consider doing the same! To learn more about their organization, visit their website here.
We look forward to another exciting month with you!
And remember to always Eat well, Love more, and Give back!
